Once Saltillo tiles are installed and grouted, they are very attractive. When properly sealed, they are easy to maintain and they will literally last forever. We hope that you enjoy them as much as we do!

Saltillo tiles are handmade tiles from Mexico. They are rustic and have a lot of personality. Saltillo tiles have the following characteristics.

• Saltillos are not all flat.
• Saltillos are not all square.
• Saltillos are not all the same size.
• Saltillos are not all the same thickness.
• Saltillos have chipped edges.
• Saltillos have lime pops (little craters).
• Saltillos occaisionally have cracks on the surface.
• Saltillos occaisionally have animal prints. These are considered lucky!
• Saltillos have shade variations (even within the same tile).
• Saltillos are prone to alkali in the clay. To minimize problems they must be properly sealed and kept sealed.
• Saltillos have sandy backs (caused by dumping the wet tile from the mold onto the ground to be sun dried before before baking).
• THESE ARE NOT DEFECTS. They are what make Saltillo tiles so attractive.
